The award to King’s of a new MRC Centre for Transplantation was announced in March 2007. This was one of five such prestigious research centres awarded to King’s – more than any other University.
The main administrative site for the Centre is housed at Guy’s Campus of King’s College London. This central office houses the Centre Director, Professor Steve Sacks, and the administrative and support team led by Centre Manager Dr Jill Holliday. The research effort for the Centre is spread across several divisions and over three sites of King’s College London. The main research programmes are:
- Stress molecules – Professor Adrian Hayday
- Complement – Professor Steven Sacks
- Coagulation – Dr Anthony Dorling
- T-cell regulation – Professor Robert Lechler
- Humanised models – Professor Frank Nestle
- Tooth replacement – Professor Paul Sharpe
- Molecular genetics – Professor Ellen Solomon
- Molecular/cellular imaging – Professor Reza Rezavi
In addition the Centre is reliant on its close links with clinical research teams at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust. The Clinical Alliance provides the essential high quality clinical research required for the translational aspects of the Centre. The following team leads are involved:
- Professor Stephanie Amiel – Department of Diabetes and Endocrine Autoimmunity
- Professor Anil Dhawan – Clinical Senior Lecturer, Department of Liver Studies and Transplantation
- Professor Nigel Heaton – Department of Liver Studies and Transplantation
- Mr Geoff Koffman – Consultant, Renal Transplant Unit
- Professor Ghulam Mufti – Department of Haematology
- Professor Diego Vergani – Department of Liver Studies and Transplantation
- Professor Giorgina Vergani – Division of Gene and Cell Based Therapy
To further diversify and expand the work of the Centre a collaboration has been forged with the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics. Professor Genevra Richardson will be bringing her considerable expertise to the Centre to further research the impact of some of the ground breaking work taking place here.
